SPREADING THE WINGS OF YOUTHS
Operation Broken Wing is a regional charity fitness event. Our purpose is to bring the Fitness community together for a meaningful cause - raising funds for the forgotten youth. Each year, the fitness community around the Asia Pacific Region will carry out their own version of Operation Broken Wing through different ways and means. The community will be coming together to make a difference!
HOW ARE FUNDS RAISED?
OBW has 2 main events. the first would be the workout, "Fight For Hope" and another would be the Yoga equivalent, "Yoga For A Cause". Sponsors of each participant agree on a fixed donation for each successful repetition prior to the workout. The total amount raised by a participant amounts to the total reps performed multiplied by the sponsored amount per repetition.
As a grassroots event, funds are raised through the efforts of all participants both prior to, and during the workout itself. The sponsors are often friends and family of participants!
WHO ARE WE RAISING
Beneficiaries across all cities help youth at risk. If you are performing Fight For Hope in your own backyard, we encourage you to Fight for someone and pick a beneficiary to raise funds for in your own city.
WHO ARE FORGOTTEN YOUTHS?
A youth is typically considered "Forgotten" if they are:
From dysfunctional families
School drop outs / have not received schooling
Engage in anti social behaviors
More information on our beneficiaries can be found under our Beneficiaries tab
"ALL THE FITNESS IN THE WORLD AMOUNTS TO NOTHING IF WE CANNOT EXTEND A HELPING HAND"
- Coach Kevin Lim, CrossFit Singapore
Operation Broken Wing was founded in 2010 by Coach Kevin Lim at CrossFit Singapore, the island’s first Crossfit box, inspiring many to make a difference in the lives of others. In 2010 and 2011 alone, OBW raised a total of $20,000 for the orphans in Chan Su Lan Methodist home in Singapore.
In 2014, after a 2-year hiatus, OBW rebooted and spread its wings to include athletes from Innervate CrossFit, CrossFit Singapore and Reebok CrossFit Enduro. As the Community matured, so did our beneficiaries. At Innervate CrossFit, we conducted our first edition of our workout, "Fight For Hope" raising $27,000 for REACH Community Services Society.
In 2015, we had our biggest growth spurt yet. Seeing the success of 2014 and the impact of OBW on the lives of so many young people, we invited the entire Crossfit Community in Singapore to participate in our fight for youth at risk. A resounding success, more than 180 athletes and 700 individual sponsors gathered at *Scape Singapore, the talent and resource hub for youth in Singapore, raising $198,000 for REACH Community Services Society.
In 2016 we took our adventure a step further and expanded to the wider region. Now, OBW has grown from just a fitness charity event to a movement championed by many all around the World. We had 7 cities conduct OBW in their own satellite cities and we are proud to say that as a community we have grown beyond any measure! We managed to raise a total of $170,000 for REACH Community Services Society in Singapore and as a region, we managed to raise close to $250,000 for beneficiaries all across each city.
From the years of 2017 through to 2019, we grew in mass and impact as we started to reach out to the communities in a larger fashion through programs in collaboration with schools and other charitable organisations such as Singapore Children's Society and grew in national recognition. OBW also became an inclusive, accessible event opening doors to the elderly, children, peripheral youth and disabled individuals to participate. Finally in 2020, the largest change and growth happened with the inclusion of a 2 day event in OBW with the duality of the Fight For Hope and Yoga For A Cause.
